Let's talk History ..! Nationalism in India CBSE grade 10.

History as a subject is more often considered boring or difficult to remember. Most of the students share the same thought when it comes to learning History.
   Actually  this is not the case. History is very interesting if you decide to learn it rather than trying to remember it. Well, all said and done, you just cannot ignore History when it comes to CBSE.

1. Nationalism in India

Question 1

How did the business class associate themselves with the Civil Disobedience movement?

Ans- During the First World War, Indian merchants and industrialists had made huge profits and became powerful. They reacted against colonial policies that restricted business activities. They wanted protection against imports of foreign goods, and a rupee – sterling foreign exchange ratio that would discourage imports.

1.The industrialists attacked colonial control over Indian economy, and supported the Civil disobedience movement.

2.They gave financial assistance and refused to buy or sell-imported goods.

3.After the failure of the Round Table Conference, business groups were no longer uniformly enthusiastic.

4.They were apprehensive of the spread of militant activities, and worried about prolonged disruption of business.

5.To organise business interests, they formed the Indian Industrial and Commercial Congress in 1920 and the Federation of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) in 1927.

Question 2

What was the impact of Swadeshi and Boycott movement on Indian National Movement ?

Swadeshi and Boycott movements had a great impact on Indian National Movement.

1. Both movements united the people to work for one common goal – the National Movement.

2. The people raised their voices for their rights and they started the production of indigenous goods; and established factories. Calcutta Potteries, Bengal Lakshmi Cotton Mills were few of its examples.

3. The use of Swadeshi goods and boycott of foreign goods led to the downfall of British industries.

4. Most of the Indians got emotionally attached to the national movement. Many poets composed national songs to inspire the people at that time.

5.In the 1870s, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote ‘Vande Mataram’ as a hymn to the motherland and wrote Anandamath which developed the sprit of National Unity.

Question 3

Why was the Khilafat committee formed in 1919?

Ans- In March 1919, in Bombay a Khilafat committee was formed to defend the temporal powers of the Khalifa who was the spiritual leader of the Islamic world.

Question 4

Trace the development of peasants’ movement in Awadh.

Ans- In Awadh, the peasant’s movement was led by Baba Ramachandra.

1. The movement was against talukdars and landlords who demanded from peasants high rents and a variety of other cesses. Peasants had to do begar and had to work at landlord’s farms without any payment.

2. The movement demanded the reduction of revenue, abolition of begar, and social boycott of oppressive landlords.

3. The Qudh Kisan Sabha was set up headed by Jawaharlal Nehru, Bala Ramachandra and a few others.

4. The peasant movement, however, developed in forms that the Congress leadership was unhappy with. As the movement spread in 1921, the houses of talukdars and merchants were attacked, bazaars were looted, and grain holds were taken over.

Question 5

Who formed the Swaraj Party? What was its aim?

Ans- Swaraj party was formed by Moti Lal Nehru and C.R. Das.

The aim of this party was to:

1. Fight against the repressive measures of the British Government.

2. Launch agitation for speedy attainment of Dominion Status.

3. Enter the councils for the formation of provincial governments.

4. Oppose the British policies within the councils and demonstrate that these councils were not truly democratic.

Question 6

Discuss the role of icons and symbols in unifying and inspiring a feeling of nationalism.

Ans- As the national movement developed, nationalist leaders became more and more aware of such icons and symbols in unifying people and inspiring in them a feeling of nationalism.

1. A tricolour flag (red, green and yellow) was designed during the Swadeshi movement in Bengal. It had eight lotuses representing eight provinces of the British India, and a crescent moon representing Hindu and Muslim unity.

2. By 1921, Gandhiji had designed the Swaraj flag. It was also a tricolour (red, green and white) and had a spinning wheel in the centre, representing the Gandhian ideal of self-help. Carrying the flag, holding it aloft, during marches became a symbol of defiance.
